In my opinion, there isn't a more prominent popular culture artifact than the statement " Fra-G-Lay; must be Italian" from the movie A Christmas Story. This movie, which at the time was considered a box-office flop but went on to be considered one of the top Christmas movies ever, the statement "Fra-G-Lay; must be Italian" is made by the narrator's father after receiving a "major award".
As you go through this week, place something out that says "Fragile" at your school or office and see how many people make the same statement as seen in the movie.
"A Christmas Story" is one of my favorite movies. I try to make it a family tradition that on Christmas Eve we sit down as a family on watch it. I like the lay out of your blog, but was wondering how do you define popular culture and what does it mean to you? I think you definitely picked a great artifact.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that this is a really good movie and I know they show it for like 24 hours straight on one television station all day on Christmas, but I am probably one of only a few that have honestly never seen the whole thing. I have seen bits and pieces but never sat and watched it all. I am really beginning to thing I should. :-)
ReplyDeleteWith that being said I think this is a great choice as an artifact as I know it is loved by many. Good job.
At first, I thought, when I read your blog....is "A Christmas Story" really part of pop culture? I thought that just because of its age, but its still hugely popular and relevant to such a large audience. Makes me think, if something becomes a classic, then is it still part of our pop culture?
